How to Read Greek Time on a Sundial<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The sundial is the intersection of nature with science, mathematics, and physics. It is a device that measures time based on the shadow of an object when it is struck by the sun’s rays.
Firstly, when we say noon, we mean two things: a) the time when common clocks show 12:00 (this time is the same throughout Greece) and b) the time when the sun dominates, when it is at the highest point of its path and the shadows are vertical (solar noon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, in each region of the country, the sun dominates at a different time of the day, resulting in a variation in terms of geographical longitude (distance from Greenwich). Also, because the sun does not always “follow” the same path in the sky, even in the same region, solar noon varies from day to day.
For the two reasons mentioned above, adjustments are necessary to correctly “read” the indication of the sundial into Greek time. By observing a sundial, we can still orient ourselves towards the points on the horizon, because by construction the gnomon aligns with the North-South line.
We observe the shadow of the gnomon on the hour chart and read the solar time.
Then, on the correction chart, we locate the appropriate month and corresponding date and see correction D. We add this correction to the solar time, and the Greek time is obtained.
During daylight saving time, we add an additional hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
